Val d’Aran by UTMB® is the newest event created by UTMB® International, together with InAran Sports and with the support of Conselh Generau d’Aran (Government in Val d’Aran). It is the fifth event of the UTMB® family, joining other iconic and touristic destinations which are particularly appealing for trail runners keen to explore the world: UTMB® Mont-Blanc, Gaoligong by UTMB®, Oman by UTMB® and Ushuaia by UTMB®.

As on all other “by UTMB®” events, finishers of Val d’Aran by UTMB® will be able to collect their “Running Stones” and ITRA points, providing them with a direct entry for UTMB® Mont-Blanc without having to go through the lottery. The Running Stones accumulated are valid for a four-year period.Registrations will open on October 7th at 12 pm (UTC +1) exclusively through the event website, and by direct purchase, without going through a lottery. The registration period will be open until June 1st 2020 or until race bibs are sold out – whichever comes first. There will also be special prices for the first registrations. There will be a total of 4,000 bibs available across the three distances.

Alongside the main Val d’Aran by UTMB® races, Baqueira Beret Trail Festival will also be celebrated at the same time. Based in Pla de Beret, this will be a fantastic spot for supporters and the general public to enjoy the ambiance, see the runners and participate in the various activities offered.

On Saturday morning (July 4th), there will be different races for all ages; from kids to junior, together with activities for all the family. The PDA 55 km will also start from Beret and moreover, the VDA’s first runner is expected to pass through Beret (which is a life base) at around 8 am

Val d’Aran, which is known for its hospitality, is preparing to welcome all runners, supporters and public. It is the only Atlantic facing valley in the Central Pyrenees, located between Spain and France. A valley with its own culture and language, a unique climate, eternal snows and exquisite gastronomy, it is a first-class winter and summer touristic destination. 3,000m giants are waiting to see the best runners in the World enjoy a spectacular race.

The races

Torn dera Val d’Aran (VDA)

The main race, equivalent to UTMB®, that goes around all Val d’Aran. Starts and finishes in Vielha, passing through mountains, valleys and the most spectacular areas in Val d’Aran, as well as through villages lost in the middle of the mountains. A course that will leave a mark on all runners.

This great landscape variety reminds us of the four elements in nature: AIR, for the views to the top of Pyrenees; EARTH, for the mines and their history; WATER, for the great amount of lakes, and FIRE, for the Aranese culture, where fire plays a key role in its celebrations.

Camins de Hèr (CDH)

Camins de Hèr, or Iron Tracks, is the race equivalent to CCC®. Starting in Les, a key village in Val d’Aran highly involved with outdoor activities and trail running, CDH runs “the last” 101km of VDA. Plaza of Eth Haro in Les will host the start of this race. Runners will go to Val de Toran, a wild valley which is an explosion of nature. After ascending more than 1.000 m, the landscape changes completely in Liat; trees disappear, and colours change from an intense green to a reddish tonality. Water will then take over and become the star over the last 50 km. The cirque lake of Colomèrs, the biggest glacial cirque in the Pyrenees, with more than 50 lakes, will host this last part. The runner will pass over more than 20 lakes and reach the highest point of the race, Pòdo’s pass, at 2.600 m.

There, we will also celebrate the Baqueira Beret Trail Festival, a family event with activities and races for the younger ones. A speedy race that will test the fastest runners characterized by a huge amount of lakes and rivers at the door of the National Park of “Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici”.
